Typically, only one of the two disable pins is used, but the default is for both disable pins to be active. This version ships fully assembled with connectors soldered in. This pin is connected to ground and does not function by default, but current limiting can be enabled by making the modifications described below. For applications that require a low profile, a single capacitor can be installed on its side as shown in the picture to the right. Otherwise, this pin is weakly pulled high. The diagnostic pins can be left disconnected if you do not want to monitor the fault conditions of the motor drivers. By default, this carrier board connects the current sense pins to ground, disabling the current limiting feature. However, soldering is required for assembly of the included through-hole parts.

The actual current you can deliver will depend on how well you can keep the motor drivers cool. The control source and the motor driver must share a common ground. This versatility, along with an option to power the Arduino directly from the shield, sets this board apart from similar competing motor shields.
